(April 2, 2018) – According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, in 2017 nearly 50,000 Americans were diagnosed with oral cancer, with more than 9,750 deaths as a result. That’s roughly one person per hour.
Proper education is the first step in fighting back against oral cancer. Unfortunately, a study conducted by Vigilant Biosciences says that 62 percent of adults in the United States know very little, or nothing at all, about the disease.
To reduce such frightening numbers, Great Expressions Dental Centers (GEDC) in Southfield is sharing the tips below during its Speak Out Against Oral Cancer campaign this April to help lower the risk of being diagnosed. Participating GEDC offices are also providing free Advanced OralID Cancer Screenings for every patient who visits in April.
- Brush and floss your teeth regularly
- Examine your mouth monthly for sores and symptoms
- Eat cancer-fighting foods (e.g., beans, berries, dark leafy vegetables, etc.)
- Avoid tobacco products
- If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation
- Exercise frequently
- Visit your dentist regularly
As part of its Speak Out Against Oral Cancer awareness initiative, GEDC dentists across the country are inviting patients to “guess the phrase” in a lighthearted and engaging video on this serious topic. To see if you can guess the facts the dentists are communicating about the disease in the videos, visit facebook.com/greatexpressions.
Finally, continuing its commitment to funding research for a cure, GEDC will make a monetary donation to the Oral Cancer Foundation at the end of the month. For more information on Great Expressions Dental Centers or to schedule an oral cancer screening, visit www.greatexpressions.com.
