Great Expressions Encourages Everyone to Turn That Frown Upside Down

(Oct. 01, 2017) – People with straight teeth are perceived as more likely to be happy, successful, and second-date worthy according to a recent study by Invisalign. To celebrate National Orthodontic Health Month and National Dental Hygiene Month (October), Great Expressions Dental Centers (GEDC) is encouraging everyone to turn their frown upside down and share in the unique benefits of the universal sign of happiness—smiling.

Orthodontia, the treatment of improper bites and crooked teeth, and dental hygiene, the practice of keeping the mouth, teeth, and gums clean and healthy, includes benefits that go beyond the noticeable physical changes of straighter teeth or proper bite. Extensive research has shown improvements in confidence, self-image, performance in school or work, and even projected income due to a smile an individual is comfortable showing.

“Many children and adults continue to be concerned or insecure about their smile, which may prevent them from reaching their full potential,” said Dr. Robert Brody, chief clinical officer of GEDC. “In an effort to combat these feelings, we encourage children to begin their orthodontist visits around the age of seven to identify the proper treatment to guide tooth and jaw development. Even after visiting their orthodontist, many individuals don’t realize the many ways their smile has an effect on their overall health.”

In addition to improving confidence, smiling:

  • Reduces blood pressure. The simple act of smiling causes an increase of endorphins throughout the body, lowering blood pressure. Stress levels also decrease.
  • Improves your immune system. Cortisol levels decrease, improving the immune system, with every smile.
  • Increases chances of a promotion at work. Research has suggested that individuals look smarter when they smile, leading bosses to believe they are engaged, confident, and easy to work with.
  • Lands the job. Individuals are 58 percent more likely to land a job when competing with someone of a similar skill set if they flash a straight smile.

The journey to a straight smile begins with making an appointment at the nearest GEDC location. To schedule an appointment or for more information, call 888-SMILE-80 or visit greatexpressions.com.
