4 Tips for Dental Crown Care

June 20, 2022

Sometimes, a tooth needs a little more than a filling. A tooth can be badly damaged by decay, or fracture, requiring additional protection.  Dental crowns, also known as caps, cover these previously decayed, chipped, or fractured teeth.

Crowns protect your smile by shielding it from further damage. They also are available in a variety of materials, including gold, porcelain, and types of metals.

After treatment, it’s important to keep your teeth healthy, and the crown shiny!  If treated properly, crowns can last many years.

We’ve compiled a list of tips to care for your crown during Smile Protection Month.

Tip 1: Don’t Bite Too Hard!

Sometimes, you may be tempted to nibble on the edge of a pen or use your teeth to open a plastic bag. Avoid chewing or biting very hard materials, since this can increase the risk for damage.

Tip 2: Keep Up With Cleanings

Visit your hygienist to help prevent further deterioration of the tooth under the crown.

Tip 3: Establish Healthy Habits

Effective brushing and flossing is key to keeping your crowns in tip-top shape! Maintaining these habits will prevent further decay or disease.

Remember to set a two minute timer during your brushing time. Many dentists recommend brushing twice a day and flossing once per day.

Tip 4: Stay Connected With Your Dentist

It’s important to have regular appointments so your dentist can monitor the condition of your crown. The last thing you want is for it to be dislodged or damaged.

At Great Expressions Dental Centers, we offer a network of dentists who will make sure your crown gets the royal treatment. Make an appointment with us today!
