Children’s Dentistry: The Importance of Starting Early

February 1, 2023

What is children’s dentistry?

Children’s dentistry is a specific field of dental care that involves working with children from birth through adolescence. Practices that specialize in children’s dentistry will offer a wide range of treatment options, as well as expertise and training to care for your child’s teeth, gums and mouth.

Why is children’s dentistry so important?

The earlier your child begins getting regular dental checkups, the better. This sets the foundation for good oral health and helps alleviate fear and anxiety around the dentist. Early checkups help prevent cavities and tooth decay, which can lead to pain, trouble concentrating and other medical issues. Kids with healthy teeth will be able to chew food easily, speak clearly, and smile with confidence.

Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children in the United States, with more than 40 percent of children having decay by the time they reach kindergarten. Children’s dentistry is crucial for recognizing potential problems and teaching children how to properly care for their teeth and gums.

According to The American Dental Association, children should visit a dentist by age one, or as soon as the first tooth appears. This first checkup is called a “well baby visit,” and helps teach parents and caregivers how to care for their children’s teeth. Some topics that your pediatric dentist may cover include:

  • Causes of tooth decay, such as sleeping with baby bottles, drinking milk or juice before bed, and allowing sugary substances to stay on teeth.
  • Switching to a cup after the age of one to reduce the chances of milk or juice being consumed at bedtime.
  • Proper brushing techniques for children to teach parents the best way to care for their children’s teeth until the child can brush and floss themselves.

It’s normal for children to feel apprehension about the dentist. They may fear new faces, loud noises, and foreign instruments. Ease their concerns by explaining to them what the dentist does and answer their questions.

How can I help my kids with their oral health?

Set a good example by prioritizing your own oral hygiene, and your children will want to model your behavior. Make sure they see the dentist regularly and encourage daily brushing and flossing habits.
