Great Expressions Reports 10 Percent Increase in Ortho Appointments During Summer Months

July 1, 2016

DETROIT – JULY 01, 2016 – The perception of braces has changed drastically over the past several years. So much so that many teens in Asia are paying for faux braces that are worn for fun. Though that trend doesn’t appear to be catching on in the United States, Great Expressions Dental Centers (GEDC), a leading national dental service organization based in Michigan, reports that orthodontic appointments at its offices typically increase 10 percent in the summer months while teens and pre-teens are out of school.

While GEDC sees thousands of patients for orthodontics throughout the year, the summer tends be a popular time to receive orthodontic services, such as braces, primarily because students have the summer off from school, which prevents them from missing classes to visit their local orthodontist. However, another reason students may prefer to get braces in the summer is that it allows them to adjust to them before spending all day at school.

“We see many students that decide to get their braces during the summer,” said Dr. Sindy Goodman, a GEDC Orthodontist in Michigan. “The kids are no longer in school and generally not in sports or study clubs, and this makes it easier for Mom or Dad to do the consultation during their downtime. Since it can vary for each family, we try and make it easier with morning and evening consultations plus Saturday appointments.”

Specific signs that a child is ready for braces include crooked or overlapping teeth, overly crowded teeth, or losing baby teeth too soon. The American Association of Orthodontists suggests that an orthodontist should be consulted for evaluation when the child is age 7. GEDC recommends that children start seeing a general dentist or pediatric dentist within six months of the first tooth becoming visible, or by age one. By doing so, the dentists helps guide tooth development until it is time for an orthodontic consultation. Helping the child get the care they need and smile they want while saving mom and dad money.
