Satisfying Your Sweet Tooth: How Halloween Candy Impacts Orthodontic Health

October 4, 2022

If you or your little one is gearing up for tricks (and lots of treats) this Halloween, have no fear! Even with braces, there are plenty of tasty treats and sugary snacks you can enjoy.

Below, we highlight the types of candies and how they can impact your orthodontic treatment.

How Braces Work

Braces gently guide your teeth into their correct place and they consist of brackets and wires that work together to slowly move the teeth into the desired alignment. The brackets are glued directly to your teeth, while wires are threaded carefully through each slot (American Association of Orthodontics).

Certain types of food and candy might actually loosen the brackets and cause damage. This can prolong orthodontic treatment and be uncomfortable.

Candies to Avoid

Hard and gummy candies may loosen your brackets. The following candies have a greater risk of damaging your braces.

  • Taffies and caramels
  • Hard candies
  • Popcorn
  • Nuts
  • Gum
  • Jellybeans
  • Licorice
  • Suckers
  • Sour candies
  • Any “chewy” candy
  • Candy apples

Suggested Treats

Softer treats that melt in your mouth are much less likely to cause damage. The following are less of a risk to eat and enjoy:

  • Chocolates (Avoid caramel and nuts)
  • Peanut butter cups
  • Marshmallows
  • Cookies
  • Chocolate bars (break into smaller pieces)

Halloween Candy

If you are indulging in any spooky sweets, it’s important to realize that any candy can get stuck around your braces. Remember to brush thoroughly after you eat those treats. Keep in mind, it may take several rounds of brushing to completely remove all the candy remnants.

There’s no need to fear! If you do bite into something hard or a bracket comes loose, you can make an appointment with your orthodontist for an adjustment.

At Great Expressions Dental Centers, we want you to get the smile of your dreams while still enjoying everyday life. If you are interested in an orthodontic consultation, make an appointment with us today!
